The Crying Light

The Crying Light

39:24 Release Date: 19 January 2009

ANOHNI’s third full length album with her ensemble The Johnsons includes cellist Julia Kent, violinist Max Moston, multi-instrumentalists Rob Moose and Doug Wieselman, bassist Jeff Langston, and drummer Parker Kindred. The Crying Light features a portrait of ANOHNI’s hero Kazuo Ohno, one of the founders of Butoh dance. On this album, ANOHNI steps out from the interior landscape of I am a Bird Now and addresses her spectral and complex relationship with the rest of the natural world. The song Another World was later interpreted by Joan Baez on her final album. Some of the recordings including Everglade were arranged by Nico Muhly and ANOHNI for orchestra.

“It's the most personal environmentalist statement possible, making an unforeseen connection between queer culture's identity politics and the green movement. As music, it's simply exquisite – more controlled and considered than anything Antony and the Johnsons have done and sure to linger in the minds of listeners." -Ann Powers, LA Times
